Fernando García Band:
Gusábara Puerto Rico - CD Release Concert
!

Puerto Rican drummer, composer, and bandleader plans to release his third album this year. It showcases his talents as a drummer and composer, as well as his ability to unite an amazing group of energetic musicians from the New York City Latin-Jazz scene. It also features the Grammy-nominated and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón.

Fernando Garcia Notes:
Fernando García is a drummer, composer, bandleader, and educator well versed in a wide variety of musical styles. Born in San Juan and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, García started in music at a young age, and by 16 he was already playing gigs in Puerto Rico’s reggae scene. He also performed, as a student, at the Tito Puente Amphitheater on various occasions for the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest. These early experiences inspired him to study music further at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. During his time there, he had the opportunity to take lessons with Héctor Matos, who would go on to become a lifelong mentor and friend. Fernando was awarded the Juan Luis Guerra scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music’s graduate campus in Valencia, Spain. Berklee Valencia gave Fernando the opportunity to study with great artists such as Victor Mendoza, Mariano Steimberg, Alain Pérez, and Yoel Páez, among others. This proved to be a time of great focus and personal development in performance and composition. He then moved to New York City where he established himself as a drummer, percussionist, composer, and educator. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to play as a sideman with many great artists such as Abraham Laboriel, Perico Sambeat, Ricardo Pons, Pepe Rivero, Alain Pérez, Guillermo Klein, Julio Montalvo, John Benitez, and Ximo Tébar, Xiomara Laugart, Axel Tosca,  among others. As a bandleader, he has Axel Tosca, Luis Guerra, Román Filiú, and Nathaniel Townsley, among others. As a bandleader, he has two albums out: Desde Arriba (Fernando García Music 2012) and Subidor (Montalvo Music 2013) in where he mostly explores the folkloric and very rhythmic bomba music of his native Puerto Rico and succeeds in fusing it with the harmonic and improvisational aspects of jazz. He is currently working on a third studio album with plans to release in 2018.

"Puerto Rico native García organically blends folkloric Bomba rhythms and Latin jazz in a myriad of satisfying ways. His simpático crew of youngbloods push the envelope on García's third album as a leader and debut for ZOHO music."

- Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

“Fernando has put together a very focused and cohesive recording, surrounded by a talented group of young musicians. The music is rhythmically inventive and extremely smart, built on the rock soliddrumming by the leader. In all a very well rounded album, which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did.”

- Miguel Zenón

The concert will be 9 pm at Teatro Latea: 107 Suffolk St, New York, NY 10002

We hope to see you there!
