Ignacio Berroa Trio
Straight Ahead From Havana
“... the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz...”
—Dizzy Gillespie

"Ignacio Berroa has been a drummer very besieged by great stars of the Jazz, due to his handling of drumsticks, his intuition and his adaptation to any rhythm or style, as well as his personality. This leads him to be a super bandleader" - Luis Raul Montell, Jazz Caribe

"...Ignacio is not only a terrific drummer, he's a wonderful human being, as well! Martín Bejerano left me drooling!...".
However, I must disagree w. Dizzy when he said that Ignacio was "... the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz..."
I would include (from the pre-Berroa era), such luminaries as Guillermo Barreto & Walfredo de los Reyes (Sr.)! We could then move on to Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, Julio Barreto & most recently, Dafnis Prieto! There are probably a few more coming our way! BTW, this in no way diminishes the talent of my dear friend, Ignacio!
As to the composer of "Drume negrita," there were 3 Grenet bros., Eliseo (the most prolific), Emilio & Ernesto. Eliseo wrote: the danzón, "La Mora," "Ay, mama Inés," "Lamento cubano," "Lamento esclavo," "Las perlas de tu boca," "Sóngoro Cosongo," etc. Emilio wrote: "Quirino con su tres," "Tú no sabe inglé," "Vito Manué," "Yambambó," etc. He also wrote a wonderful book: "Popular Cuban Music," but it was Ernesto who wrote: "Drume negrita."
