Paul Carlon's 11-piece ensemble takes you on a fantastic journey through the Strayhorn repertoire, seeing it as a vehicle for reinterpreting guaguancó, son, bomba, and timba. Featuring sultry vocals, the tres guitar, horns for days, and subtle Afro-Caribbean rhythms, La Rumba is a Lovesome Thing celebrates the life and work of Billy Strayhorn.
“Mr. Carlon’s treatment is the best kind of fresh take on classic material, rendered with a perfect balance of adoration and irreverence that never misses the mark.” -- Will Friedwald, The Wall Street Journal
“Four Stars”; Best Albums of 2013

The brainchild of Dr. Benjamin Lapidus, Sonido Isleño is Latin Jazz in the truest sense of the term: the exploration of Jazz and Spanish-Caribbean music in an accessible, organic, and logical way. The New York musicians involved are completely bi-cultural residents of the largest Caribbean city in the United States, having performed and recorded with a who’s who of Latin music and jazz including Pedro Martínez, Candido Camero, Phil Woods, Eddie Palmieri, Andy and Jerry González, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, and The Buena Vista Social Club. Active since 1996, Sonido Isleño has delighted audiences in Europe, South America, and throughout the United States, releasing 5 critically acclaimed albums of original music along the way. The band is currently preparing to commemorate its 20th anniversary with a new recording, to be released in 2016.
“When Ben Lapidus brought his group Sonido Isleño (Island Sound) to Chicago’s Green Mill jazz club last November, nobody in the packed house seemed to mind that his main instruments are more associated with Latin folklore than bebop.”
--Aaron Cohen, Downbeat Magazine
“Lapidus is also an acknowledged virtuoso on the Cuban tres, a guitar-like instrument with three sets of double strings—and when he plays this, he really merges the two musical worlds, sounding authentic while at the same time moving the tres beyond its folk limits and into the jazz world.”
--Budd Kopman, Allaboutjazz.com
“This is one of the hippest groups, with a unique, dynamic sound full of textural variety.”
--Nelson Rodríguez, Latin Beat Magazine |
